Redhead Rescues Animal Sanctuary began in 2020 with one woman and a determination to help animals who had nowhere else to turn. The woman is Teresa Underwood, who has worked with animals in many ways for a number of years and has owned a vast range of her own animals during her life. So from an idea shared online during lockdown, friends and supporters encouraged her to start the rescue page and when she eventually did, the response was immediate, the community grew and the rescue followed. Her compassion has since grown a lot and the rescue has also welcomed a dedicated small team of volunteers who support everything from Admin, fundraising, vet visits and hands-on care.

Redhead Rescues started with a few field animals but it soon became apparent that there was a big need to start offering dogs and cats places due to the high number needing rehoming after lockdown, and continues to date.

Now Redhead Rescues Animal Sanctuary has become a lifeline for dogs and cats across all areas of Northamptonshire and beyond, that are in need of rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming.

For Teresa and the team, making a difference happens every day. We all aim to make the process of surrendering or rehoming an animal as easy and reassuring as possible for everyone concerned and especially the animals. Working in the rescue means witnessing the resilience, strength and unconditional love every day from animals that have been mistreated, abandoned and forgotten. Different animals also teach the team new lessons continually, including patience, forgiveness and kindness, which affects everyone and their families around them.

The Rescue doesn't operate a public site with paddocks, kennels and cattery, instead, all of our dogs and cats are cared for within trusted foster homes. Whilst in the fosterers' care, the animals are assessed, vet checked, neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, flea and wormed as a minimum and prepared for adoption to a well-matched and assessed forever home. This means we get a clear vision of the animal in a home situation and their behaviours within that environment. The Rescues field animals are kept in three private paddocks or sites within Northamptonshire, including horses, donkeys, pigs and goats.

Redhead Rescues Animal Sanctuary is a completely self-funded and non-profit organisation and we rely on fundraising, donations and volunteers to continue the essential work the rescue does.
